The regional government wants electricity companies to be involved in the fight against energy poverty - a term that emerged during the economic crisis - and so it is to “invite” the companies to pay the bills of those who cannot afford them.

The director-general for energy, Joan Groizard, says that this was one of the proposals raised at the first meeting of the working party on energy poverty that consists of representatives of government, consumer associations, the electricity companies and NGOs.

Francesc Dalmau, the director-general for consumer affairs, explains that since 2007 the energy bill has doubled. In eight years, electricity “has gone up 76% and gas by 35%,” with a resultant doubling of delays in paying bills. The Balearics, he notes, is the region of Spain with the most of such delays.
