Per capita consumption in the Balearics fell more than 16% between 2007 and 2014 to an average expenditure of 11,448 euros, making the Balearics the region which felt the crisis hardest in terms of aggregate consumption.
The drop of 16% was almost twice the national average of 8.6%. However, the scale of recovery for 2014 was such that, for example, spending in restaurants, which had fallen each year from 2007, rose by more than 22% last year.
The Barclaycard-IESE survey of consumption indicates, therefore, a turnaround last year, during which spending on most products showed positive growth. A further indication, according to the survey, is that the Balearics had the highest per capita spend on vehicle fuel and lubricants: more than 20% above the national average.
