Puerto Pollensa moorings project is against regulations

The Balearic Environment Commission has taken note of a recent report by the department for natural areas and biodiversity which drew attention to a decree issued in March 2007. This established a plan of management for a "site of community (Balearic) interest" (LIC) in the bays of Pollensa and Alcudia. Under this, anchoring can only be on sandy seabed, while the installation of a whole series of buoys, as proposed in the project, cannot be allowed. The report also refers to the "excessive" scale of the project.

Although the commission has yet to say whether the project could go ahead (or not) without the need for an impact assessment being made, the report makes it virtually impossible in any event, as it would need a change in the regulations.

This is not the only moorings project being considered for Puerto Pollensa. There are two others, though the government has yet to say whether they would be affected or not by the same regulations. The yacht club also wants a floating dock and 62 berths to be added to existing ones. Apart from consideration under the LIC decree, these would also be subject to impact assessment studies.
