Joan Monjo, the deputy mayor of Santa Margalida and the town hall's delegate for Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina, has attacked opposition criticism of a plan to install a chiringuito (beach bar) and sunbeds on the part of the beach in Son Serra that is within the Santa Margalida municipal boundary.

Monjo has compared this opposition for beach facilities with support - at town hall and regional government levels - for the sewage treatment plant in Son Baulo with the outlet that is planned for some four kilometres out to sea. How can they oppose one thing and not the other in the same protected area, he has asked.

He insists that the town hall has not yet taken the decision "one hundred per cent" regarding the beach. Meanwhile, a human chain protest against the scheme is due to take place on the beach on 10 January.
