An off-duty National Police officer rescued two children who were screaming for help in English when they got into difficulties at Son Serra de Marina beach on Sunday evening.

The children, a boy of seven and a girl of ten, had gone into the sea despite it having been very rough and there being a red flag. The lifeguards had, by the time the incident occurred, finished for the day. The children were at risk of being swept away by a strong undertow. The police officer, who had been spending the afternoon at the beach, was able to rescue the girl first - she was on the point of going under - and then the boy.
