A study by Jaume Rosselló and Andreu Sansó of the University of the Balearic Islands' applied economics department suggests that the tourist tax will reduce the number of tourist "stays" by around one per cent. Based on a total of 81.9 million stays (i.e. the number of nights spent by all the tourists who come to the Balearics), the reduction will be in the region of 880,000.

My taxes came up to a whooping 12 euros for my 7 day stay. This for 2 adults and 2 kids. It's not a dealbreaker. If we were talking 100 euro or more, i would choose an other destination.
And the greedy hoteliers will reduce it even more with their price hikes. Not that they care most of their hotels are in other countries.
David Sumner - Don't worry, if you have been following the previous postings regarding the Balearics being over-run with tourists, apparently they won't miss us! Let's see how they feel in a couple of years time when they are relying on their "wealthy" British/German residents for income which ,if you believe the tripe which is spouted on here, is the wish of the ex-pats. Personally, I wish them all the best with that !
As I've already written Thomson's have increased my holiday for 2 for next year by £400. With that and the exchange rate your tax is the last straw. We will miss Mallorca.
Hang on a minute- back of the envelope calculation : 880 000 nights x average spend 100/night per tourist including acommodation (conservative) = 88 million which would,if it had not been for the Tourist Tax, have been injected directly into the economy and creating primary and secondary ripples. The implied loss of employment, tax revenues in a year I personally think will be a challenge for Mallorca given the currency and geopolitical changes, seems a huge price for a windfall of 30million, of which most probably will be spent on trophy projects.
I don't call a 1% reduction minimal: it's a big loss because it hasn't taken into account the gearing effect of that reduction as it moves through the economy. Anyway, on the tit-for-tat principle we'll all lose because no doubt the UK government will simply do the same to Spanish citizens visiting after Brexit to take advantage of the strong Euro (you hope!). In all these calculations nobody seems to factor in the extra cost of collecting taxes or of the inevitable corruption that will "disappear" so much of it.
SILVER SURFER ---You were fortunate. Most Tourists have had to pay €10.00 per. person, and certain youths, for a 7 Day Stay. I hope the forthcoming Visitors Tax to Britain, will make Balearic Visitors have the same feelings, when they have to pay . As the same feelings that Tourists have, when confronted with the Tax at check in ,in Mallorca. Will we see accounts, as to how much has been collected?. Also, where the Tax revenue is spent . ?NOT ON PALMA!!!!!!!
As a long time resident and taxpayer in Mallorca, I was quite surprised that I had to pay the tourist tax when I stayed in a local hotel for a couple of nights ! That said, 55cents per night didn´t break the bank and I can´t believe that tourists would be put off from coming here by the small tourist tax charge.
