The Gelats Valls ice-cream kiosk in Puerto Pollensa will close today. At four this afternoon, there will be free ice-cream, a gesture to thank those who have supported the family business in its attempts to stave off eviction and so bring to an end more than fifty years of operation at the kiosk.
The closure was inevitable once mayor Miquel Angel March confirmed the eviction order last month. There had been a six-month delay in effecting the order, which led to a charge of malfeasance against March and former mayor Tomeu Cifre being presented to a court in Inca.
The town hall's eviction order was the result of a previous charge that it had been showing favour to Gelats Valls without there being a public tender for the site.

They have, right next door.
What an absolute disgrace this is. The powers that be are ruining a beautiful town by their bullying tactics. Hopefully the owners of this wonderful ice cream kiosk can find another prominent spot in the town.
Appalling bully boy tactics of the larger conglomorate businesses taking over the town soon Puerto Pollensa will resemble every other generic town centre killing the character and the unique selling point of the place, tourists will take their trade elsewhere KEEP PUERTO POLLENSA SPECIAL
And so another massive tourist magnet disappears from porto pollensa. Well done to all those concerned. It is a shame that commercial greed and jealousy has killed a great stall.
I never thought I would be sad to have a free ice cream :(
