Agreements have once more been signed between hotelier associations and the town hall for the Calvia, European Winter programme from now until April. This programme of free activities for those staying in tourist establishments in the low season aims to reduce the impact of seasonality, give the local economy a boost and improve employment.

The activities include walks, workshops, guided tours, excursions and special events, all of which help visitors to discover local heritage, history and culture within the Calvia municipality. There will this year be more walks and activities on beaches as well as more workshops for local products.

As regards walks, the town hall is looking to develop the use of the Galatzó finca. Therefore, mountain guides from the employment and training project "Rutas de Calvia II" will be taking part in this year's programme. This project is within the youth job guarantee scheme, operated by the Balearic employment service, the regional ministry of employment and with co-funding from the European Social Fund.

The Calvia, European Winter programme began in 1992 and has been going ever since, so this will be its twenty-fifth season. Management of the programme is being undertaken by the hotelier associations for Palmanova-Magalluf, Santa Ponsa and Paguera. The activities are being designed in conjunction with the town hall. The programme will be distributed to hotel, tour operator and travel agency clients and will also be available at tourist information offices.
