Yacht clubs in the Balearics are to press the national government for a legal framework to be established for sponsorship. They are looking for tax incentives to be granted to companies which sponsor events.

Miguel Suñer, the president of ACNB (the Balearic yacht clubs association), says that they have been asking for a sponsorship law for many years but that there has never been any movement on one. With a new government in place, they intend to try again. "We're convinced that it (the government) will help us to find private funding for enhancing nautical sports at all levels."

The association was meeting at the El Molinar club. This was a show of support for the renewal of the concession that is currently being processed by the Balearic Ports Authority. "We have always advocated yacht clubs managing moorings in order to cover the costs of their activities," adds Suñer. "This should be no different at El Molinar."

The favourable opinion of the national environment ministry for redevelopment at El Molinar is, he notes, "good news". The association is urging the ports authority to be sensitive to the work of the El Molinar club and to therefore ensure its survival and abilities to organise regattas and the sailing school.
