A 35-year-old male, who suffers from schizophrenia, is suspected of having stabbed his 70-year-old mother and then trying to attack his brother at their home in Palma at 22.30 on Monday night.

"My son has stabbed me" were the first words the victim told the emergency call centre operators when she dialled the helpline.

When the ambulance reached the scene they found the victim on the floor, covered in a blanket, with her head resting on two cushions and bleeding from various wounds and blows to the head. Standing in front of her was her son, staring transfixed at a group of neighbours who had rushed to the victim’s aid.

Many of them apparently told the police that he, the son, had carried out the attack before turning on his brother who managed to escape. The suspect’s mother was rushed to Son Espases Hospital in a serious condition. She was operated on yesterday.

Her son was also taken to the hospital where he was being held in the secure area and being examined by psychiatrists.
