Playa de Muro was yesterday named Europe’s tenth best beach and therefore the best in Majorca. Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera came in sixth, while Spain came out on top with La Concha Beach in San Sebastian taking top spot.

TripAdvisor revealed the Best Beaches in Europe yesterday as part of its annual Travellers’ Choice Awards. The winners are chosen based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings on the site over twelve months.

While beaches in Spain and Greece feature on the list, some of the other choices are more surprising. Dorset’s three-mile-long Weymouth Beach came in ninth place, while Cornwall’s Newquay also ranked within the top 15.

TripAdvisor spokesperson Hayley Coleman said: "UK’s Weymouth Beach beating beaches in Sardinia, Greece and Spain this year proves that the UK’s beaches can more than hold their own against destinations with sunnier climes."

As well as being located in the city centre with an impressive 1,500 of white sand, La Concha is particularly noteworthy due to its small island in the middle of the bay, Isla Santa Clara. The island has its own little beach, a lighthouse, picnic tables and bar, and sunbathers can swim out there from La Concha.

Looking further afield, Baia do Sancho in Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha (an archipelago with Unesco world heritage status) has been crowned number one beach in the world. "The bay of crystalline water and soft white sand coupled with surrounding cliffs teeming with exotic wildlife are what dreams are made of," according to TripAdvisor.
