The new road will hopefully reduce the accidents. | Vasil Vasilev

Work on the Llucmajor-Campos road will not start until at least the end of the year. The Council of Majorca had planned for it to have begun by now.

However, the definitive project for the work is seemingly stuck in the system at the Balearic Environmental Commission. It has to give the red light once it has taken into account modifications to the project. The current administration at the Council changed the one designed by the previous Partido Popular regime. The main hold-up, it seems, involves eliminating the plan for a roundabout and replacing it with an underground link replete with bike and pedestrian paths.

Even when the commission gives its approval (or not), the Council will then have to give further approval for the new layout before putting work out to tender. The process for this can last as long as six months, given that the final budget for the road has to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Only then can the process of awarding contracts and starting work begin. Following this, the work has to be completed within two years.

When the road is finished, it will be a dual carriageway with two lanes on both sides with a central reservation of 3.5 metres width. The current road is notorious for its accidents, so much so that it is referred to as "the road of death".
