Larger cruise ships in Palma have required development to accommodate them.

Two significant developments for improving cruise ship service are under way at Palma's port. At Dique del Oeste a new marine terminal will provide more efficient movement of passengers and greater capacity for luggage. At the Poniente Norte dock there is to be greater operating surface and a lengthening of the pier to accommodate both cruise ships and ferries, which can arrive at the same times.

In order to improve service levels there was a need to enlarge the esplanade at Poniente Norte. This is to be achieved with a lengthening of 371 metres which will ultimately create an esplanade area of more than 36,000 square metres. This is something fully integrated into the ports authority's strategy for port traffic.

The authority has a marine terminal but it isn't suitable for serving the much larger ships that are now arriving. The work will therefore meet requirements for these ships and their passengers and be undertaken in accordance with safety requirements.
