When you think of city breaks, relaxing on a beach is not usually the first thing that springs to mind. However, a recent poll by Omio identified that city breaks can indeed combine culture and coast, sand and shopping and that, yes, a ‘beach and the city’ break is more than possible in Europe.

To determine the best city beach destinations, Omio analysed over one thousand European cities, comparing criteria such as beach and water temperature during the summer peak season, the nightlife, the availability of water sports, as well as other important factors such as travel time from the airport to the city centre.

Two Spanish destinations achieved places in the top five, with Alicante placing first and Palma taking a very respectable third place.

Destinations such as Ibiza, Saint-Tropez and Cannes were, unsurprisingly, among the highest rated in the nightlife segment, while Palma, Palermo and Split featured in the top five in the watersports category.

Palma also got high marks for travel convenience, with the city centre being just a 15-minute drive from the airport, with other transport options also available making it highly accessible for visitors.

Moreover, its golden beaches, high temperatures, as well as its fantastic yet affordable restaurants helped put Palma in one of the top positions and shows that it really is a European capital of culture. To read more, visit the study here
