A plaque in Alcudia which dates from 1939 and is dedicated to Francoist troops is to be removed. The plaque is mounted on a rock along the road to Cap Pinar, a road that was built by Republican prisoners. Yet the plaque suggests that it was the work of Nationalist soldiers. The inscription reads: "Year of Victory. 1939. Battalion of Majorca engineers. 1st and 5th companies of sappers."

At Friday's council meeting, the proposal that the plaque be removed received the support of all parties with the exception of the Partido Popular. The town hall ruling administration comprises El Pi, the party of mayor Toni Mir, PSOE and one councillor from Gent per Alcudia.

The PP opted to abstain. When invited to speak, the PP decided not to. This wasn't the first time that the PP had chosen to abstain on a motion related to the Civil War. Earlier this year the town hall approved the initiation of the procedure to remove the title of adopted son that had been given to the Conde Rossi in 1936. Rossi, real name Arconovaldo Bonaccorsi, was an Italian fascist. When this procedure was completed, the PP did in fact vote in favour.

The town hall is contemplating putting up a different plaque, one that will state that the road was built by Republican prisoners. Those prisoners were responsible for the building of other roads in the area, such as the main road to Puerto Pollensa. Yet the plaque suggests that it was the work of Nationalist soldiers.
