A bus was completely destroyed by fire this morning while travelling between Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa.
The incident occurred around 10am near to the junction for Cala San Vicente. The regional transport ministry says that in addition to the driver there were 26 passengers on board. Everyone was able to get off the bus safely.
The ministry suggests that there was technical failure (which is probably obvious) though it hasn't specified what. The bus, it notes, was 11.4 years old and had passed the necessary inspections.
Firefighters from Alcudia attended the scene. The fire naturally had an impact on service on the route.
Last month, a Transunion coach caught fire while transferring holidaymakers from Calas de Mallorca to the airport. There have been other bus fires in the past couple of years, such as on the Palma-Valldemossa route and involving Palma EMT buses.
The ministry notes that there is a policy of renewing the oldest buses in the fleet. Around thirty have been replaced in recent months.
Strangely enough during that week I saw 2 broken down TIB buses between Crestaix and Pollensa receiving treatment. First time ever! Maybe something going wrong with the maintenance programme??
