The folk dance festival used to bring a great deal of colour as well as some marvellous performances. | Julián Aguirre

The folk dance festival that was held in Palma from 1986 to 2011 is to be revived.

The festival ceased to be on the death of one of its main promoters, Tomeu Ensenyat. A loss of institutional support didn't help with keeping it going, but now another Ensenyat - Miquel, the president of the Council of Majorca - is giving support for the festival's return. It will be called the Mallorca World Folk Festival and the intention is, says Ensenyat, to give it the maximum exposure as a means of increasing the prestige of the island.

The revived festival is planned for September next year. It will bring together folk culture associations in Majorca and of course groups from the mainland and other countries. The island's associations, suggests Ensenyat, could be involved in the festival's management.

A further idea is for the festival to be branch out to parts of Majorca as well as to be in Palma. The expectation is that it will be highly participative and create grand social occasions. For Ensenyat, it will represent an opportunity of demonstrating the idiosyncrasies of folk culture in different parts of the island.
