Eight people have been arrested in Palma's Son Gotleu district on suspicion of forcing women into prostitution. Those arrested are part of a gang that was also operating in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) but which has been broken up by the National Police.

The eight appeared in court on Thursday afternoon. Two have been remanded in custody.

The police operation in Son Gotleu was on Tuesday morning. Officers closed off one street - Pico Cebollera - and raided one address. The people arrested are said to have forced fellow countrywomen to engage in prostitution and to have threatened them with the use of voodoo.

What this all means is that the National Police have made further progress in attacking the criminal gangs which are behind the trafficking of women from Nigeria and then sending them out onto the streets of Magalluf and Playa de Palma, where the intention is to rob rather than to practise prostitution.
