The Balearic President, Francina Armengol says prostitution is a violation of women’s human rights and is calling for it to be eradicated.

Speaking at the 5th Conference on Prostitution at Casal de Peguera, which was organised by Calvia City Council, President Armengol also thanked the groups that care for prostitutes.

“They did a magnificent task, especially during the pandemic when prostitutes had many more difficulties,” she said.

President Armengol recalled that in 2019, the Government approved the first Autonomous plan to combat the trafficking of women and girls for sex and pointed out that six other Communities are participating in the project which has been included in the Balearic investment strategy for economic recovery through European funds.

38.6 million euros is being invested in the four year project which is called ’Network of Autonomous Communities for a life free of violence for women in contexts of prostitution and the elimination of trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and adolescents’.

"We are leading a project to address the situation and help 2,500 women get out of prostitution," said President Armengol who also mentioned that according to a study by the UIB's Prostitution Studies Group commissioned by IBDona, 9 out of 10 women who engage in prostitution would stop if they had an alternative.

The project will offer training programmes, initiatives aimed at socio-labour integration, help to validate the training qualifications of migrant women and offer psychological support.

The Balearic Islands, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla la Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia and Navarre are participating in the project.

The Minister of the Presidency, Civil Service & Equality, Mercedes Garrido; Balearic Women's Institute Director, Maria Duran; Consell de Mallorca Insular Director, Rosa Cursach, Calvia Mayor, Alfonso Rodríguez and Representatives from the Government and Palma City Council also attended the conference.
