A leadership election will be completed within the next week. Speaking outside the door of her Number 10 Downing Street office, Truss accepted that she could not deliver the promises she made when she was running for Conservative leader, having lost the faith of her party.
"I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party," she said.
"This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady. We've agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week. This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country's economic stability and national security."
Below is the full text of her speech in Downing Street:
"I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills, Putin's illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent and our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth.
"I was elected by the Conservative Party with a mandate to change this. We delivered on energy bills and on cutting National Insurance. And we set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.
"I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.
"This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady. We've agreed that there will be a leadership election, to be completed within the next week. This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country's economic stability and national security. "I will remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen. Thank you."

Sir Pure BloodWell, that's wishful thinking. You might benefit from taking a look at what's happening in the UK. It's actually quite unique in the world at present.
The current chaos in the UK is only what will happen in the EU within the next 12 months. All governments are now completely without the trust of those who elected them.
Who would've predicted it? 😁 Anyway, it was inevitable, as I've been saying since she took office. There just isn't any cake. And you can't eat what you don't have. And if you try, you'll end up with an empty plate. But I'd argue it isn't just the Tories that are in chaos. It's the whole UK. Caused (largely) by the Tories, yes, but then, I also don't see any Messiah in the wings. No matter what party they come from or who gets elected. The best that can be hoped is to contain the bleeding. There's not much will from outside the bubble to save England from itself. In its hubris, it's isolated itself a bit too much to expect much sympathy (or trust) from anyone. This whole thing, since before Brexit, has been nothing but a foolish exercise in ignorant insular arrogance. The belief that somehow, England is above it all, and immune to that fantasy. Worse yet, so confident that England can spit its closest allies in the face, in the misguided presumption that it's far too important for anyone to take offence (and if they do, it's out of "spite" and "jealousy", "intransigence"). Monty-python-esque irony. Well, to (deliberately) repeat myself, reality always has a funny way of sorting things out. Sometimes brutally. Often brutally. Welcome to reality, enjoy your stay!
