The Spanish Parliament has given the green light to the new Nomad visa which will allow those who work remotely to live and work in Spain for up to five years. The so-called Nomad visa, is open to all citizens including Britons, and also includes tax breaks.
The new visa will allow those who work remotely to stay and work in Spain for up a year. Once their legal stay has ended, they will be able to extend it by two years and later up to another five years by applying for residence authorization to be a remote worker in Spain.
“It’s one of the most enjoyable moments I’ve experienced in the Parliament. It’s a law that will allow Spain to be at the forefront in the push and promotion of talent in this rapidly growing digital economy,” the Economic Affairs Minister, Nadia Calvino said.
By the end of the month, it is expected for the government to determine the exact requirements and conditions for digital nomads, including the minimum amount they have to earn, although the amount is expected to be approximately €2,000 per month.
- Martin Dell, co-founder of Kyero.com, the UK’s biggest online overseas property portal, said:
“The new Spanish visa is great news for digital nomads in the UK and internationally. Before this the only visa options for Brits were the ‘non-lucrative’ visa, which doesn’t allow you to work, and the ‘Golden’ visa which requires an investment of at least €500,000 in the country, so this new accessible visa will be appealing to many people looking to work in Spain, particularly young people.”
“As European countries look to recover from the pandemic, many are developing new digital nomad visas for non-EU citizens to entice people to the country and this visa should do just that. Covid-19 accelerated the interest in moving overseas and working remotely, as more workers became untethered from the office or considered self-employment. Many countries are keen to appeal to highly skilled and economically active digital nomads to support economic growth.
“Spain remains a popular location, and we are seeing a rise in a new demographic of overseas buyers moving there to live and work. It’s much easier to base yourself anywhere now, and thanks to new visas like this, people have the choice and freedom to base themselves where they want to be.”
The Nomad Visa in Spain
Any non-EU citizen can apply for a special visa to work in the country as a digital nomad for up to five years. They will need to have lived outside Spain for at least five years to qualify.
Provided no more than a fifth of their income comes from organizations based in Spain, the normal 25% rate of income tax will be reduced to 15% for the first four years they are based in Spain. Digital nomads will be allowed to bring close relatives to live with them.

It seems to me the politicians in Mallorca seem to be running in circles and contradicting themselves on every policy. Regarding Nomads the government seems to think it’s a honour to come and work and live in Palma. Maybe they should concentrate on reducing crime, because Palma has one of the highest crime rate in Spain, maybe reducing crime may make it more attractive
Zoltan TeglasI used to be a member of the Labour Party in the U.K.. I can even remember when it represented the working classes. Now what is it now ,as Lisa says ..schizophrenic. A hodgepodge of minority interest groups totally adrift from its core vote. At least with that dinosaur Corbin the voters new what he stood for. The Labour Party only present policy of personal attacks and trivia which in collusion with media is proving successful in providing instability only. The new course of action attacking those around Sunak including his wife.very distasteful. Yes their current interview approach “not our job to have solutions “ is being challenged by commentators. The same economic mess as presently affecting most of if not all Europe. Made by Covid overspend years of loose money supply since financial crisis and some very unwise European states energy policy. “ Picture this “ Sunak calls Starmers bluff and calls an election tomorrow, unlikely but possible. What’s Labours offer. What did the man say “ it’s the economy stupid “ The Tory political circus aside what’s the labour offer that’s going to be that different. Maybe wallpaper, Cake and envy will see them through opposition but not into government.
David HollandTo be fair to the labour party it's hard not to criticise the UK government - they've turned the place into the laughing stock of Europe. And it's not their job to propose solutions for the mess the tory party has made of the UK.
Lisa , Ulla. Politics , Playing to the gallery while looking after vested interests. It does look confused at times. But Majorca’s elite do seem to excel at it. Same in U.K. , the Labour Party are masters of news cycle criticism without a coherent alternative plan of their own. I think we should have Baldric as world president. At least he always had a “cunning plan.” And couldn’t be worse than the current shower of politicos running things right now in most western states.
Lisa JuliaThat's the best summery of the situation I've seen in a long time. The Nomads and their families should live somewhere, where it's a constant moaning from the government of lack of properties. Noone thought of that in the Government here I assume. You really can't make it up.
Has anyone else noticed the almost schizophrenic mixed messaging coming from the Government? Yes you can be a digital nomad. No you can’t buy property if you don’t intend to live here. Or a car. Yes to winter tourists. No to other tourists … that’s until summer hits and tourism slows … then panic!!! I think they really need to get a consistent communication strategy sorted. No idea …
