The direct flights launched between Palma and New York last summer have been a game-changer and Mallorca is now in a position to attract thousands of U.S. and Canadian tourists. According to the head of tourism at the Council of Mallorca, Andreu Serra, they will become key markets for the island in the future. Mallorca is pulling out all the stops to promote the island in the U.S. and Canada.
U.S. market is key for us, says Mallorca tourism boss
75 U.S. travel agents will be visiting the island next year in major promotion drive

camila culverrThe resorts are largely shut down anyway, so it's much more likely that any winter visitors will end up where the food is authentic, good quality and inexpensive.
Culture, food, and winter warmth? Please Americans, go to Madrid or Barcelona. The best food in Mallorca is not Malloquin. So, not authentic.
Steve PickeringI should remind you that the currency is Euros, not "pounds". Or dollars. And with respect to the press dissonance you refer to, yes, there's one group who's particularly loud about its aspirations to seriously limit foreigners and foreign investment in general, as part of a Balearic "nationalist" ideology. Apparently, they haven't yet seen what that did to others. Everybody else just wants it to be well managed. But it makes top grade fodder for fury and outrage headlines.
So more American tourists are wanted, but certain sectors want less tourist full stop. Make your minds up. Plus be careful what you wish for, living a town that gets a massive influx of Americans each year. The amount of times we have to remind them that the local currency is Pounds and not dollars :-D
It's true that there are more American tourists. I can verify that with first hand experience. However, I have yet to meet any American tourist that's flown the Newark-Palma direct route. I'm sure it's popular, but I seriously doubt it's the main reason for the increase in American tourists. There's hundreds of other routes. I'd be more inclined to believe it's Mallorca's increased visibility in print, television, and film, along with the celebrities owning homes and/or visiting and inevitably, showing up on social media, with millions of followers that's driving it. But either way, it's a good thing.
