Four days after disturbances on the streets of Palma's Son Gotleu district, around 300 residents gathered on Friday afternoon to call for the expulsion of Algerians and an end to violence.

Representing different communities - Spaniards (including gypsy families), Moroccans, Nigerians and others - they were united against who they see as the cause of recent problems.

Four months or so ago, young Algerians started arriving in Son Gotleu. They are accused of break-ins, robbery with violence and assaults. They are said to always carry knives and to often be high on drugs. For the most part they have occupied squats.

The police - National and Palma - were out in force. Many officers were in plainclothes. This presence was expected to be maintained for several hours.
