A total of 111 groups of varying kinds will take part in the protest in Palma on Sunday organised by the Menys Turisme, Més Vida platform (Less Tourism, More Life).
The organisers say that the protest is the result of months of work that has "inspired citizen initiatives". 'Let's change direction, let's place limits on tourism' is the main slogan for an action which is "against mass tourism and a process of touristification that suffocates us, condemns us to impoverishment and the continued precariousness of our lives, and an irreversible degradation of the territory and the natural and cultural heritage of the islands".
"The demonstration is taking place in the middle of the tourist season and we want it to be a turning point and the start of continuous mobilisation on the streets, in neighbourhoods, towns and villages, workplaces, educational centres, the agricultural sector in the fight for housing."
Seeking an abandonment of tourism monoculture, the organisers add: "The change we demand is not of a tourist type. We long for a fair, egalitarian economic model that addresses the current ecological and social crisis."
They are seeking repercussions internationally among tourism markets: "To put pressure on the political class so that, beyond changes in discourse and false manoeuvres, they attend to the demands of organised civil society in favour of limiting and decreasing tourism and a change of model."
Support has come from Mallorca's cultural scene, such as from Pau Debon, lead singer with the indie band Antònia Font. In a video on social media, he says "it is necessary that we do something, that we set limits".
A YouTuber, Toni Horrach, has invited citizens to take part. "If you're tired of mass tourism and don't want Mallorca to become a theme park, you shouldn't miss it."

It is the mallorquins themselves that they have to thank for everything. It was the mallorquins that sold the mallorquin properties to the foreigners. It's them that own bars and restaurants that are always full and love making profit, the same ones that complained during COVID for not having customers. When they sold their properties it was nice to have the money, now it's not nice being invaded... A Spanish colleague was saying "without tourism, they wouldn't even have the money to buy the spray to write tourist go home on the wall...". But how many of the protesters work in horeca?
Maybe the Balearic government should have a look at estate agents practices. A couple of whom informed an American buyer that our little community of 14 apartments can be let out to tourists and would make him a lot of money in the tourist months 🤷♀️ Against our community rules by the way but the agents didn’t seem to care. Too much money to be made.
You should ask Yvette Cooper that question instead of me.
Richard, we all know that you don't like foreigners much, but you do know the difference between a "foreigner" and a "refugee", right? Far more of those people speaking funny languages are actually "foreigners" not "refugees". So you may as well call 'em what they are. But perhaps even more confusing for you: not all "foreigners" are "illegal", and in fact, many foreigners (especially the ones from Spain) actually have the right to live here. And they didn't come here on a rubber boat. Really. Look it up. Or are you just angry because technically, you're an "illegal", yet all these foreigners are living here with impunity? So unfair, innit?
BeachcomberWho is calling for 'no tourism' ? Did you actually read the article before commenting?
Turkeys voting for Christmas. Once they go, they won't come back. Hope they like dole queues

Beachcomber, finished reading the Daily Mail today have we?
The same lot that go around parading “Refugees welcome” placards.
No tourism = No life, think about it, will be like living perpetual winter months with no work and no savings. What Majorca needs to do and should have done ages ago is cut back on the todo incluidos who spend nothing outside their tourist complexes, but of course the mass market hotel groups would not allow this to happen, too many vested interests.
