About six months ago the Balearic President Francina Armengol called for the islands to be given vaccine priority as a result of the importance of tourism. Madrid said no. All of Spain would be treated the same. But all of Spain is not the same. An estimated 95 percent of GDP in the Balearics is related to tourism. No tourists, no income. But the problem at the moment is even more pronounced, no vaccine, no tourists no income.

This is probably the most important headline MDB has published. We continue to be inundated with rhetoric from Spanish and Balearic politicians. Yes it will be safe in May, yes they’ll have a marketing campaign (so that will solve everything) yes, Brits and Germans are poised at their keyboards ready to book their Mallorca breaks. Well they won’t - not until the local population in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands are vaccinated. That’s the bottom line. Really, people living on the island aren’t stupid. These ridiculous stories and Government press releases are, well, ridiculous. Time to wake up and save the islands.
It's a sound economic argument, but the reality is that in order to give the vaccine to 20 somethings who work as waiters, check in clerks and receptionists you are going to have to take them off a 60+ year old somewhere else in the country, and some of those people will die as a result. I just don't think that any politician wants those headlines laid at their door, however sensible they may be economically.
