The celebrations conclude with the dance of the cossiers | R.F.
An image used for the January patron fiestas in Campos shows a jolly gentleman and a smiling lady.
Sadly, the story of the saints Julià (Julian) and Basilissa wasn't that jolly. They were both martyred, apparently in 304 on the order of Emperor Diocletian. As to their relationship, they married but served God "with great purity" and remained virgins.
Until recently, Julian was the main saint. Now, however, Basilissa is his equal; the images of the pair are in Sant Julià Church in Campos. They have the honour of starting the fiestas' calendar in Mallorca.
The celebrations conclude with the dance of the cossiers. But before this is a party from 11am with music, vermouth, tapas and dances by characters usually to be found at a Mallorcan fiesta - giants, bigheads and demons.
