THE worst fears of Real Madrid fans before the summer were splashed over the tabloids over the weekend. Their weekend defeat in the Spanish league and their exit from the Champions League has just rubbed salts into their wounds. Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez told the Bulletin last summer that they were a family club who liked family men, hence why David Beckham was an ideal choice. Now all of a sudden the papers are full of reports of Beckham playing away from home while Madrid's form continues to falter. Beckham's alleged affairs will do little to improve his standing at Madrid especially for the fans who are not interesting in reading the lurid details of Beckham's private life they are just interested in him playing well and scoring goals on the pitch. I suspect that Beckham won't be at Madrid next season. A quiet move to Japan or to Chelsea will be on the cards. Spain has never had the same fascination with the England star as Britain has. His wife has often been criticised by the Spanish media. Victoria Beckham, snubbed Spain, electing to stay in England to further her career. Its all very sad. Real Madrid is not just a football club. For many in Spain it is mas que un club. By winning trophies Madrid has given Spain much prestige. Many ardent fans didn't want Beckham because they suspected it would just become a tabloid circus. Unfortunately they were right. I've always liked Beckham, he seemed a decent person and until last weekend an excellent role model. But I am afraid to say that his alleged antics could be his downfall. The best thing he can do is to try and patch up his marriage and start playing how he did at the start of the season otherwise I think you can safely say that his reign in Spain will be over. Another example of an England star who can't make the grade abroad.
