A day to cherish

I sometimes don't understand the Spanish. It's not a question of language it's a question I suppose of a different mentality. The heir to the throne Prince Felipe marries in Madrid in a fantastic wedding and I must say that the celebrations were rather muted.

In Palma apart from two giant TV screens...there was nothing. In Madrid barely 40'000 people lined the route (100'000 people watched Real Madrid v. Real Sociedad). There was criticism in the Spanish newspapers yesterday that many world leaders had snubbed the event and that only one in three Spaniards had watched the event on TV. Also, there was plenty of criticism of the 17 million dollars which was spent on the wedding. Spain should have celebrated in style, street parties, giant TV screens, firework displays across the country. They were celebrating a major union in a royal household which is respected world-wide. As I watched the wedding on Saturday I found myself thinking that if this had been in Britain the country would have come to a standstill. There would have been parties galore and a really festive atmosphere and you have to take into account that on the surface the Spanish royal family are far more popular. Two million people were in the Mall for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. I think it is time that Spain woke-up to what they have; a fantastic royal family which are true ambassadors for their country and do plenty of good for Spain's cause. Saturday was a day for celebration and I certainly hope that the crowds come out for the celebration tour the royal couple are doing of the country.

Spain should feel very proud of its royal family. They are simply the best. There is no room for criticism in what was a great day for Spain.
