Staff Reporter THE outgoing director of the Son Sant Juan Airport, Dionisio Canomanuel, warned that the Son Sant Joan airport could reach “saturation” point in the next couple of years.

He said that if the passenger numbers continue reaching those figures that have been registered in recent years, then the airport will need to do something so it can cope.

Last year, the airport dealt with a record number of passengers, 20 million.
Canomanuel was speaking at a press conference yesterday. He will be taking over the role of the director of the Lanzarote airport after 15 months at Son Sant Joan.

The person taking over at Son Sant Joan is Nemesio Suárez, who has been the Director of the Minorca airport for the past 19 years.
Palma airport could receive up to 21 million passengers this year, said Canomanuel. The most important thing, over and above these increases “must be to give priority to a quality service and to not let these figures increase further as it could reach melting point”, he added. In this way, he mentioned that the airport must bank on a future with “sustained relative growth”, and that “the current traffic levels must be consolidated and quality must lead the sector as the key to air transport is safety”. Furthermore, he asked the airline companies to stop and “think” about asking for rush hour slots, as this could produce a situation that “is not good for the airport nor for the environment”, he said. “They must be more flexible with their timetables, we do not care about increasing rush hour slots because this will mean that quality will be lost”, Canomanuel said. “This is not about sharing air traffic”, added Canomanuel, who also said that it will be “difficult” to get this message across to the airline companies. “The companies want to offer their services for the most demanding times”, said the new Director of Lanzarote airport.

Canomanuel will be handing over his responsibilities to Suárez tomorrow.
