POLLENSA is to get a big financial boost with the Council of Majorca agreeing to invest 15.9 million euros in order to carry out a number of projects including the controversial Puerto Pollensa ring road.
The President of the Council of Majorca, Maria Antònia Munar and the Mayor of Pollensa, Joan Cerdà, met yesterday morning to discuss the projects, as well as to talk about the projects that have already started and those that will be starting this this year and next.
Pollensa's roads are to receive the lion's share of the budget.
The Council of Majorca is planning to invest 12 million euros to construct the Puerto Pollensa ring-road, which will be completed in two phases over the next few years, despite a wave of public protest.
It is also going to reform the road from Pollensa town to the Port, which will cost around 1.3 million euros and to up-grade one of the roundabouts, which will cost 850'000 euros.
There will be much investments in cultural projects, for example, the purchase of Casal Llobera, and setting up festivals like Nit Niu and Pollensa Music (which will cost 48'000 euros and 38'000 euros respectively). There will also be a donation of 27'000 euros to the Dionis Bennàssar Foundation.
As regards other local projects, the Council will invest 94'000 euros to carry out drainage work in calle Formentor and 82'000 euros to renovate water pipes in the Port. Furthermore 50'000 euros will be spent on the construction a multi-purpose workshop for the Pollensa Port School. The Council will also restore the Puente Romano refuge, at a cost of approximately 580'000 euros and 70'000 euros will be given to renovate the Guardia Civil headquarters. Also, a new tourist information office will be built in Pollensa Port. The announcement yesterday was welcomed by the local community who claim that both Pollensa has been underfunded for many years.
