By Jason Moore WHEN Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles announced that they were to marry my colleague Ray Fleming wrote in this space; “who cares...” Initially, I thought that he was mistaken, a royal wedding after all is a royal wedding even if it is in a Registry Office. But I have come to the conclusion that he was right and I believe that more people are interested in the Grand National, than the royal wedding. A sad state of affairs? Not really, the great British public has certainly been loyal to the royal family over the years and really I don't think Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles are worthy of their support. On the day he announced his marriage Prince Charles should have abdicated in favour of Prince William. That would have been the end of the whole messy story. Charles would have done the right thing. Let's face it, the millions of Diana fans are never going to forgive him and he must accept this state of affairs. By abdicating the Diana camp would feel vindicated and the young Prince would probably restore the fortunes of the House of Windsor which is no more than a laughing stock world-wide. The answer is simple and probably this is the game plan.

If the monarchy is to survive in Britain, then they must start taking into account public opinion. I was no fan of Princess Diana but I am not that interested in the royal family. Apart from being exceptionally controversial the organisation of the marriage has also become a complete farce. So on Saturday I don't think I will be watching the wedding I think I will stick with the Grand National, it is properly organised and a lot more fun.
