An excellent editorial (Sunday 13th January) and interview by Humphrey Carter of Des Mitchell. Indeed now is the time for action and not excuses. I would however urge caution before pursuing simplistic solutions such as your proposal to ban pub crawls.

Some years ago, as a travel photographer, I had occasional contact with travel company ‘youth groups' in both Majorca and Ibiza. I was highly impressed by the professionality of the young reps - both male and female - who guided excursions and pub crawls. Young female reps would control boisterous well lubricated guys in situations when I would have been cowering in a corner. Whilst reps were encouraged to sell pub crawls they also kept a responsible eye on their young clients - their managers would also be non too pleased to end up making hospital or prison visits as a result of pub crawls.

Not all young people on “youth holidays” are the loud extroverts who always appear on TV programmes and they welcome participation in such group activities. These activities, whilst perhaps not to the taste of most of your readers were relatively harmless and subject to reasonable control. I seem to recall, perhaps wrongly, that organised travel company pub crawls and similar were banned some years ago? It would appear that purely profit motivated alternatives have emerged to fill the vacuum and with little responsibility towards the participants. Some time ago the mayor of Andratx successfully stood up against the powerful Ministerio de La Costas in the interests of the residents of Andratx. I am sure that Sr Onieva is poised to lead a Jaime I inspired crusade to slice through bureacracy and clean up Magalluf by the summer.
