Well I have read the rather gloomy reports from the tours firm which suggest that bookings are down to Majorca but I still believe that the the island is going to have a great summer season. I was particularly impressed on Sunday at how good Palmanova looks. The beach looks clean and well maintained and someone in their wisdom has even updated the rather old-fashioned pedalos! What will make a difference is sterling´s increased value against the euro. Shops in Palmanova are already displaying signs which state that 80 pence equals one euro. That is certainly going to make a difference. As usual the British will book their holidays late in an effort to cash-in on all the bargains so this might explain why bookings are depressed at the moment. After four years of recession the island needs a good holiday season. The economic ills of the euro-zone could very well tip the balance in Majorca´s favour as the pound has risen dramatically in recent months. Britain may have the Jubilee celebrations and the London Olympics but we have the sun, beautiful beaches and you can enjoy both events on television from a sun-lounger on the island! What is needed though, is a bit more promotion and an all round effort involving the whole tourist industry. This is a make or break year for Majorca. The local economy needs a good summer season if the island is ever to bounce back from its economic gloom. I am quietly confident.
