Queen Sofia of Spain has been asked not to attend Queen Elizabeth´s Jubilee celebrations by the Spanish government because of the “problematic situation” over Gibraltar. Spain is angry because Prince Edward will be paying an official visit to Gibraltar and for this reason they have asked the Spanish royal family to decline the invitation. This is just plain stupid on behalf of the Spanish government. I thought that Britain and Spain had reached a sort of “unofficial agreement” which states that British/Spanish relations were more important than Gibraltar. Spain´s move is a snub to Britain and its monarch. It is a childish act which shows the Spanish government in a poor light. Gibraltar is soverign British terrority because the people of Gibraltar want to remain British. It is quite normal that a member of the British royal family should visit the “Rock” as part of the Jubilee celebrations. Spain could have quietly expressed their anger over the visit and that would have been an end to the matter. But they have increased the stakes and asked the Spanish Queen to stay clear from an important British royal milestone. I would call on the Spanish government to get their financial house in order and stop worrying about minor issues such as Gibraltar. It is rather odd that a fellow member of NATO and the European Union has taken this decision. It is also not a government issue. It is the royal family and the British monarch celebrating a major milestone.
