Plans will be unveiled this week to re-open the Renoir Cinema in Palma and the new backers of the project are calling on the English-speaking community for the support. The new Renoir will be managed by basically a group of film buffs who launched a campaign and managed to secure the support of 2'000 supporters who will effectively become minor shareholders in the cinema. They want to continue to show films in English both for foreign residents and the growing number of Majorcans who prefer watching films in their original language. I sincerely believe that the Renoir has a bright future and I know for a fact that a leading British film producer on the island is willing to give them his full support. The “new Renoir” is open to all sorts of ideas from foreign residents who will be one of its key audiences. Yesterday, I spoke of the possibility of organising a film club, combining a night at the cinema with a meal at a nearby restaurant and also organising classic film showings. Also, they are looking at the possibility of earmarking one of its screens for films which have been made on Majorca. It is a new and exciting project but obviously needs the support of members. Running a cinema is not a cheap affair and converting the screens to digital to comply with Spanish law will cost in excess of 60'000 euros. If anyone has any ideas which could be put to the new administrators please send me an email at jmoore@majorcadailybulletin.es
