For Harry Belafonte, now 85 but as involved as ever in activism and artistry. A new documentary, Sing Your Song, is due in the cinemas shortly (nb Renoir) and his autobiography will be out next month. Although he is equivocal about President Obama's first term of office he will support him strongly for re-election “because the alternative is a nightmare”. Belafonte was raised partly by his Scottish-born grandmother in Jamaica (an interesting parallel with Obama) but has been at the very heart of American politics and arts since the 1950s.
