May I remind Jason Moore that there are many of your readers who are not Conservative supporters and actually believe that if it wasn't for the coalition the UK could be in as parlous state as our host country here (Spain)? To have the temerity to suggest that the Liberal Democrats “ are holding the Conservatives to ransom” frankly is grossly missing the point. The 2010 General Election gave no party an overall majority. In this time of turmoil throughout Europe and political instability rife, the presence of a stable government in the UK for a further 3 years explains why the UK enjoys the lowest interest rates in 300 years and gives the country the breathing space to undertake the structural reforms necessary to promote growth when the green shoots appear again and the global economy starts to move forward as it surely will. Of course mistakes have been made and U turns have occurred. George Osborne has screwed up over charities and the pasty tax but he is right overall to ensure that the rich meet a greater part of the burden for closing the budget deficit left by his predecessors. The Liberal Democrats have played their part by insisting on increasing the tax free allowance for 20 million taxpayers to £9'000 per annum. This important statistic is overlooked by most of the media who wish to portray the Lib Dems as ineffectual.

It may well be that the low interest rates are hurting a lot of the Brit community here - as did the depreciation of the pound during 2008-11 - but we should be grateful when we witness the experience of other member nations of the European Community - i.e. we are not beset with the banking crises that Mariano Rajoy is undergoing at present here in Spain. As for your readers, please always remember that there is another side to most points of view expressed and a good newspaper allows a balance to be put across. I hope that this letter goes some way to redressing that balance.

Happy Jubilee! Yours faithfully
