One of the main reasons Spain is facing financial ruin is because the regional, autonomous governments have run up massive debts, so perhaps now is the time to scrap them. Watching the bitching and infighting that is currently going on in the Balearic government, I have come to the conclusion that regional governments are a luxury Spain can no longer afford. Just look at the layers of local government we have here. The regional government, the island councils and then the local councils, all costing a fortune and quite frankly, doing very little. Keep the local councils but get rid of the top two layers and let Madrid run the country as it is going to have to now do in order to save Spain.

The general public have made it quite clear to the local President, Jose Ramon Bauza, what their concerns are, cuts to health care, education, jobs and rising taxes but what have the local MPs on both sides of the house in Palma spent the past few days arguing about? Bauza's private business interests.

The opposition has time and time again appeared before the cameras, with Bauza of course (loves his picture being taken), pledging to work together to drag the Balearics out of recession and solve the problems of the electorate.

Well, they are not, only the Mayor of Palma Mateu Isern appears to be getting things done.
So, start saving money by thinning down the layers of local government, they are a waste of time and money.
