“Madness” was how a director of one of the UK's leading tour operators described yesterday's news by the hostelry sector that it intends to go on strike for 24 hours on July 20 - just a few weeks after the airport authority AENA hikes airport taxes which will inevitably lead to an increase in the costs of package holidays and flights for those of the late bookers.

Yesterday, the Balearic government called on those parties locked on the hostelry sector stand off to be “reasonable.” How about the Balearic government getting actively involved? Tourism is what we live on here in the Balearics. The Ministry for Tourism might not have any money to be proactive in promoting the Balearics but it could play an active role in trying to broker a deal and avert strike action.

It could also be working with the 23 international airlines which have complained to AENA over the hike in airport taxes and push for the suggested postponement of the tax increase until the end of the season.

But, does anyone in power care? No. Lobbying in the interests of the local community and economy is what politicians are supposed to dedicate some, if not all, of their time to and it does not cost any money, but the only thing that is moving at the moment is the private sector.

Excellent, but the private sector is not immune to industrial action, nor are those who have paid good money to come here on holiday.
