Earlier this week I suggested it might be time to take a serious look at the expensive and in most cases unnecessary layers of regional government and perhaps even scrap the autonomous governments and island councils and just leave the local councils in place in a move which would save billions of euros. Well, it appears that some one in Madrid has seen sense and the Balearics looks set to follow.

The ruling Partido Popular in the Balearics are looking at reducing the number of regional MPs, similar to Madrid, but here in Palma, the government wants to go even further by slimming down island councils as well in order to reduce the cost of running the Balearics.

Regional ministries and island council departments have already been merged but this next step could see a reduction in the number of MPs and directors sitting on the island councils. This would mean tighter control of public finances, less quangos and a major saving of public funds. And the public would not complain about that.
