The local authorities do appear to have f inally got their act together: shops are open on Sunday, airports taxes are being reduced during the winter to encourage more winter flights and cafes and bars are being allowed to have their tables and chairs along the centre of the Borne in Palma. This should help give the city more life once the shops are closed. But I am slightly concerned that it is too little too late. If only these plans had been implemented ten years ago Majorca might be riding on the crest of the waves despite the recession. Tourism has changed and Majorca these days has far more competition. The economic climate has meant that there are fewer cruise ships visiting the Port of Palma which means that Sunday opening will not be as successful as it could have been. Tourists with limited spending power will not be able to enjoy the delights of the over-priced bars and tour firms have already signalled that Majorca is not a winter holiday destination. Don´t get me wrong, I feel the local authorities have done the right thing and in the long run I am sure that these initiatives will pay a hefty dividend. Also, the local authorities could reconsider the campaign “A tourist, a friend.” It will make tourists feel at home and also remind the population that tourism is vital to the local economy. Majorca is changing like the travel industry now. Perhaps the lcoal authorities could find the cash for a major promotion campaign in Britain.
