Argentina has been on the war path this month demanding talks of the sovereignty of the Falkland Island as the 30th anniversary of the war is marked. Rather than demanding talks and reopening old wounds perhaps she should also remember that 30 years ago Argentina committed an outrage by trying to occupy the islands by force and against the will of the Falklanders. The war claimed the lives of almost 1'000 Argentine and British service personnel. Hundreds more were wounded. So perhaps, Argentina should stop flag waving and give assurances that it will never try and take the islands by force again. It should also respect the wishes of the people of the Falklands who want to remain British. A referendum next year is expected to underline this state of affairs yet again. The reason why Britain has to maintain a sizeable garrison on the islands is because of fears that Argentina could try and take the Falklands again by force. And Argentina accuses Britain of militarizing the South Atlantic! It is a time to remember and learn lessons from the past. Britain is never going to open sovereignty talks unless the Falkland Islanders give the green light. This is never going to happen. It is time for Argentina to run-up the white flag (again) and move on. It has some serious economic problems which need to be dealt with. Talking tough and nationalising Spanish companies is not the way forward. It just angers people even more.
