Going nowhere

It is rather distressing to read emails from would-be Majorca tourists whose holiday plans could be disrupted by industrial action by coach drivers later this month. The Bulletin, through our website, has set up a service to keep tourists updated on all the latest developments regarding the coach strike. We have received scores of emails and they make rather depressing reading. British tourists who want to come here on holiday but who fear that industrial action will ruin their cherished few days in the sun. One family even said that they were planning to cancel their Majorca holiday and go elsewhere to the Canary Islands. All very sad especially when you take into account that our economy here is still deep in recession. The Balearic government must intervene and resolve this dispute before it causes serious damage to Majorca´s reputation as a safe haven holiday destination. A two-day coach strike during a peak summer weekend will effectively bring the island´s tourist industry to a standstill. I remember the last coach strike almost a decade ago. There were chaotic scenes at the airport as arriving tourists simply couldn´t get to their resorts and those in the resort were going nowhere. Come on Majorca resolve this dispute. I fear that in some cases the damage has already been done because all bookers will elect to go elsewhere. No-one wants their holiday to be ruined by industrial action, however, good the cause maybe. Sort it out now.
