All is not well in Spain. Usually when you walk into any Spanish bar the subject of the conversion is football but now most people appear to be talking about the recession and how many politicians have stolen our money. The cases of alleged political corruption are starting to take their toll on Spain. The majority of Spaniards I have met say the same thing; if all the politicians who have stolen money (allegedly) gave it all back, it would be the end of the recession. In other words government coffers would be full again! If you watch Spanish television or read Spanish newspapers not a day goes by without some new case of political corruption being uncovered. The Balearics has also had its fair share. I don´t think the reputation of the political classes in Spain has ever been lower. It is very concerning, if the electorate loses faith in the political system then trouble is on the horizon. What rather concerns me is the length of time it is taking to bring all these cases of alleged political corruption to trial. Also, a number of key politicians who have been found guilty have still not gone to jail. The judiciary, to restore confidence, should be seen to be working swiftly to deal with the mounting workload. I hope, one day, in the not too distant future, the conversation in local bars will return to football once again. It would be rather nice. Unfortunately, at the moment there appears to be bigger issues than the beautiful game!
