We all know that the Balearic government is short of cash but cutting back the National Health Service is not the way forward. The government needs to make cuts but the health service needs to be ring fenced. For personal reasons I spent some time at the new Son Espases hospital on the outskirts of Palma. Now, this hospital is always in the news for the wrong reasons; it is too big, parking is not free and some parts of the building are not fit for purpose, are just some of the complaints which have been levelled at the hospital. Okay, perhaps these are valid criticism but perhaps we should also add that the hospital is staffed by a group of people who are real heroes. The hospital is big, but it is well equipped and rather than knock Son Espases we should praise it. We should take pride in the fact that we have a first rate hospital which I would say is one of the best in the country. The Balearic government needs to find the necessary funding to ensure that the local National Health Service is financed properly and effectively. We would be lost without it. Now, local NHS staff have seen their salaries cut and they will have no Christmas bonus but still they carry out their work with dedication and with a smile on their face. These days there are few things which really work in the Balearics, but I am pleased to report that the NHS is a beacon of light through the gloom. The health service is simply the best.
