GLAD to see that the Balearic government is trying to boost winter tourism but I really think it is a mission impossible. How are you going to attract holidaymakers to the island when most hotels are closed along with the majority of bars, restaurants and shops in the resorts? The few hotels which are open are in Palma and they are some of the most expensive in Spain. Then there is the small problem of tour firms not having a winter programme to the island and there are only a handful of flights. So best of luck to the Balearic government but I think they are going to need a lot more than just their 2.7 million euro budget. Last year I interviewed Willie Walsh the Chief Executive of British Airways/Iberia who said that one of the reasons why there were no flights to the island from Britain during the winter was because it was too cold. He may be right, afterall holidaymakers usually go in search of sun especially in a place like Majorca. However, I would like to wish the local authorities luck and if they can encourage more winter tourists then they should be congratulated. Now, the local authorities intend to promote Majorca winter tourism abroad. I think they should start here. First thing first is to get the hotels open. Once the hotels are open then the bars and restaurants in the resorts will follow suit. Then the local ministry for tourism can start to promote Majorca as a winter holiday destination.
