T HE local ministry for tourism is forever moaning that it has no-money to spend on promotion. But if they used their imagination they would find that there is some first rate promotion readily available on the island which would probably cost them nothing. Bradley Wiggins, Tour de France champion, Olympic hero and BBC Sports Personality of the Year loves the island and tries to spend as much time as possible in Pollensa. Infact most of the British Olympic cycling team come to Majorca on a regular basis. Now, I am sure that the small army of British cycling fanatics would love to know that some of their heroes use Majorca as a training base. Why haven´t the local authorities made any attempt to get Bradley Wiggins aboard their promotion drive? It is not rocket science. You have a top British athlete and household name who loves Majorca. All the local authorities have to do, is spread the word to anyone who will listen. Infact Wiggins could easily be invited to meet the Balearic President. If Majorca wants to encourage cycling tourism what better person than the winner of the Tour de France to head the campaign? I sometimes despair at the lack of vision which is shown by the local authorities. Golden opportunities to sell the island worldwide are missed but millions of euros are wasted on senseless campaigns. I wish one day someone would just wake-up and use their promotional material which can be found locally.
