I can see why so many of our readers are calling for the King´s Speech starring Colin Firth to be shown in English at local cinemas. I had the privilage of seeing the film over the weekend (I can´t tell you how I saw it but it was not at the cinema!) and it was superb.
It is a gem of a film made by the fact that it is based on true events. I just don´t understand why it has taken so long to produce a film on this subject. I would go further and say that school children should be encouraged to see the film because not only does it cover an important part of British history it also shows what can be achieved if you have the necessary will-power and a good teacher.
Colin Firth is excellent as King George but Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter also deserve special praise. I hope that film goes on and wins a sack-load of Oscars, but I have my doubts. It is a very British film and it may not appeal to all. It was a remarkable time in British history. If the King´s Speech doesn´t take Oscar glory it doesn´t really matter because sometimes the Academy chooses some rather unusual films to say the least! But it would certainly get my vote. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a film so much and the producers, directors and cast should be praised for making a small masterpiece.
