...for yesterday's announcement that Queen Elizabeth has accepted an invitation from the Irish President, Mary McAleese, to make a State Visit to Ireland in the near future. The possibility of such a visit has been under consideration since 1993 when Mary Robinson, then the Irish President, visited Buckingham Palace. Although the two nations share some bitter memories, relations between them have improved greatly with political progress in Northern Ireland. Problems remain, as Sinn Fein said yesterday, but this visit should contribute significantly to their solution.
