“Return of the Night Watchmen”

Dear Editor, SOME of us are old enough to remember the “serenos” or watchman system and it worked pretty well, although they sometimes were too interested in who was going home with whom. I agree with your “Viewpoint” yesterday that we have too many different levels of police forces here but I still think something like the serenos would be a useful deterrent to burglars and other trouble makers. In just the same way, the return of carparking helpers in central Palma despite the ORA system has proved very helpful, even if it does require a small tip.
